Basic Instinct by Pure Romance is yet another “pop up” pheromone perfume that’s gained some traction lately. And surprisingly, I am putting this into the “meh” pile along with Pure Instinct pheromone oil — because it’s actually workable, but lacks any “heavy duty” effects on self or others.
If you didn’t get a chance to read up on the last few reviews, I’ve basically been taking a look at some products outside of the “specialist” products available by proven, quality vendors.
This includes products like Pure Instinct (yes, a different product from “Basic Instinct”, which is created by the company Pure Romance).
These are products that I do not consider “scams”, but simply the “walmart” version of the high end products we’re used to seeing from companies like S1CK Jewelry, Alpha Dream, PXS etc.
This product, as well as the normal “Pure Instinct” have gone viral on TikTok over the past 1-2 years. Be aware of false reviews as these viral pheromone products are usually all pretty low quality.
Because although they have effects, the products seems to be cheaply thrown together, and are no better than those $2 pheromone bottles that were cropping up in nightclub John’s a few years ago.
Anyway, I picked this up as well as a grab bag to pass around as an inside joke to a few friends — and there is still a handful left to review.
And before you ask:
Although this product says it’s geared towards women on Amazon (mostly).
However:
The official Pure Romance Basic Instinct website states it’s also suitable for men under it’s “features” list:

- Rollerball allows for effortless application
- Layers perfectly with your favorite lotions and scents

What You’ll Find In This Basic Instinct Intense Universal Pheromone Review
As I said, I’ve been picking up a few extra products to review casually in between much better, more complex pheromones.
It’s a bit of a change from constantly being in research mode and looking for the next combo or crazy discovery about the latest new toy on the market.
The funny thing is, I’m used to testing quality pheromones and pure romance scents 2021 (and years before that), over months of time.
But reviews like this Pure Romance perfume can be wrapped up within a week or 2, because there is almost nothing to write about.
I was however curious about their play on the “mixes with your natural pheromones” angle they talk about several times on their website and Amazon.
Not overly curious, as all fragrances tend to “mix” with our natural body odors (whether they have synthetic pheromones or not).
However, I was sorely disappointed as with my first impressions, the scent was rather cheap and even though the pheromones were noticeable, it did not seem very potent at all.
In fact, I strongly believe this is the EXACT same product as Pure Instinct, with a different name and label.
It has a similar scent (which could be slightly different due to batches, variation in fragrance oils, age, etc)… pheromone effects, but on a very low level, and also has a rollerball applicator.
Considering this product (like Pure Instinct) seems to be unisex, it’s not exactly feasible to put a heavy dose of male or female dominant pheromones into the mix… the safest play for the companies is to put a pinch of either/and/or:
- androstenone
- androstenol (alpha and/or beta)
- copulins
As I’ve mentioned before, I have a terrible nose to pick out individual scents, so I won’t even try.
However, Pure Romance Basic Instinct seems to be yet another simple mix of these.
Their claims of the scent “mixing” with your own scent is pointless, because it smells stale and synthetic (beware of headaches).
And as for results, Basic Instinct perfume didn’t perform well enough to consider a rebuy.
There was nothing extra-ordinary to note – shop assistants, baristas, friends, acquaintances all seemed to have little or no reaction whatsoever, or were atleast curious about what the scent is (not in a positive way).
IF there were any effects, it is pretty similar to how a quality scent works where people are often drawn to the wearer (and again, pheromones are not necessary for this effect to happen).
We’ll take a closer look at Amazon reviews for Basic Instinct by Pure Romance in just a moment.
But here are my final results:
Basic Instinct pheromone oil failed to deliver any substantial effects, even with the presence of pheromone odors within the product. Strongly suspected to be exactly the same as Pure Instinct, with a different name and label, which also had no notable effects from using the product.Basic Instinct by Pure Romance

Because of the mass marketing of low quality pheromone products such as this, Amazon has also racked up a ton of reviews.
Some positive, a lot of negative.
Of course, there’s nothing to do with science here, and I’m glad they don’t harp on these old studies in their marketing material (unlike Pherazone for example).
And I suspect with positive reviews, they are most likely from people jumping on the hype train from social media, not really caring about the results over a relatively cheap product.
This Amazon review of Pure Romance pheromone Basic Instinct stood out to me:
After reading many of the other reviews, I had high hopes for this. No, I did not expect it to be life changing. Part of the way these perfumes work is that the wearer’s confidence is boosted because the scent makes them feel happier.
Other people then respond in a more positive way to the wearer’s confidence and mood. It’s human nature. In theory, there should be something to the pheremone bit too but the larger part is the attitude of the person wearing it.
That being said, when I opened the bottle (which arrived unsealed and without any box or anything along those lines), all I could think was that it smelled like a bottle of sweat. I still wanted to give it a go so I tried a bit. After all, the claim was that it was supposed to smell differently on each person (as ALL perfumes do). The whole day long, I kept thinking, “I hope that no one thinks I smell like sweat!”
The next day, I was talking with a colleague about it and she gave it a go. She felt the same as I had. And no kidding, whenever I walked by her all day long, there was a distinct odor of sweat. We both tried layering it with different perfumes and had the same result.
When the scent of the perfume wore off, we were left with that horrible lingering scent of the Basic Instinct/body odor.
I do want to say that I am a professional and am a pretty cleanly person. Wearing Basic Instinct did nothing for my confidence and only made people who are normally friendly with me take an extra step away from me.
Recommended for people who want to keep other humans away.
Beware of shills, “influencers”, and other shady nonsense online when it comes to pheromone colognes & perfumes
I’m sure there are thousands more people who are completely clueless about how this all works – but in case you missed it:
A lot of these people are paid to appear on short videos and promote the products – whether that’s through affiliate commissions, or they were paid up front by the company to promote it to their followers.
Regardless, whenever you do research on products, keep it in mind because as you can see the opinions vary greatly… and if you were to go by the 4+ star rating on Amazon, you might actually think its worth buying.
While it’s not worth buying in my opinion, there are probably enough people that got something out of it that made it worth the purchase. Perhaps in the future, they will advance their knowledge and skills with pheromones and see what they’re really missing.
As I said, I feel like Basic Instinct is basically the exact same product as Pure Instinct (even the names are similar).
The bottles are exactly the same, and I’m about 90% sure the formula and scent is supposed to be the same too.
With that said, let’s wrap it up with a FAQ and conclusion.
Basic Instinct by Pure Romance FAQ’s
What does Basic Instinct smell like?
Basic Instinct has a very cheap fragrance smell and does have some pheromone odor (which, if you are unaware, smells like human sweat). They advertise the fact that the scent is unique on everyone – as it should be for all fragrances – but I found the scent with my own smell unfavorable.
Does Pure Romance Basic Instinct Expire?
Like all fragrance products, Pure Romance Basic Instinct will probably lose its scent after 1-2 years, with a slow gradual breakdown of fragrance oils and other cologne compounds. However, the pheromones are unlikely to be damaged or lose their potency as long as it is kept out of of light.
What is Pheromone Oil?
Pheromone oil’s are typically synthetic pheromones infused with oils primarily, as opposed to oil/alcohol like a normal cologne or perfume. You can read more about pheromone oil here.
What is Pure Instinct for her?
Pure Instinct for her is a similar product to Basic Instinct pheromone oil, however it is a different company that sells that product. As far as I can tell, they are probably from the same manufacturer using the same generic pheromone formula.
Does Pure Romance Basic Instinct Oil Work?
Judging from my experiences with the product, yes it does. However, if you’re still asking yourself “does Pure Romance Basic Instinct really work?”, my personal recommendation is to stay away. Its cheap enough to not care too much, however, there are still other vendors with far superior products than the basic/low-level effects you get from products like Basic Instinct or Pure Instinct.
What are the ingredients in Pure Romance Basic Instinct?
Pure Romance Basic Instinct Ingredients: Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Isopropyl Palmitate, Fragrance (parfum), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Reconstituted Andronone, Copulandrone, Copuline-alike, Tocopheryl Acetate.
Can you use Pure Romance Basic Instinct for headache?
I could be very wrong about this, but I suspect there may be a tiny dose androstadienone in this pheromone perfume. If there is, there is a chance it may be helpful for women who are ovulating, as when exposed to androstadienone, it is scientifically proven to increase the pain threshold for women, among other effects. It could very well be used for headaches and other pain, but there are much stronger formulas available, as well as certainty that you are actually receiving androstadienone if you would like to use it for this purpose.
Conclusion
This wraps up my review of Basic Instinct by Pure Romance. Although it’s cheap, I don’t believe in throwing money away and I believe that’s exactly what this is.
Especially considering this is most likely a clone of another cheaper Amazon product, and probably from the exact same factory where they pumped this out!
This is a common theme with products like Raw Chemistry and Pheromax for example too.
The products may work, and they may be cheap, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t far better alternatives out there. Colognes and perfumes on the cheaper side such as Basic Instinct may need their own section as there are plenty of them.
Stay tuned for more.
